LGBTQ+

First, let me begin by saying that your gender identity and sexual orientation are valid and respected. At The Empathy Centre, we stand as allies to the LGBTQ+ community. People whose gender identity or sexual orientation defer from cisgender and heterosexual individuals are underserved when it comes to mental health resources.

The American Psychology Association has stated that there is no definitive research to suggest that individuals of the LGBTQ+ community are inherently more likely to express psychopathology. This means that individuals of the LGBTQ+ community are not any more or less likely to experience mental health concerns than a cis-gendered heterosexual individual. However, many individuals who need help do not seek aid due to fear of judgement.

A core value of being a therapist is to be non-judgmental. We aim to provide a safe space to help all our clients tackle any concerns they may have. Concerns may or may not be linked to the client’s sexual orientation or gender identity, but at The Empathy Centre we encourage you to be who you are and we celebrate that.

Some clients may experience concerns specific to their gender orientation, such as body dysmorphia. They may also have concerns about coming out or struggle with their sexuality and identity. These concerns can be very disturbing for a client and we aim to help you through these concerns.

Our pledge to any member of the LGBTQ+ community who seeks therapy with The Empathy Centre is that we will honour your wishes, and treat you with the respect you deserve.
