Therapy vs. Medication

Treatment for Mental Health Concerns

Seeking treatment for a mental health concern can be scary. Whether you are suffering from a mood disorder, personality disorder, anxiety disorder or any other mental health concern, you may feel overwhelmed and not know where to start your mental health journey. This is usually because clients are often unaware of their treatment options. There are two main treatment options that are utilised to treat mental health concerns.

Therapy

Firstly, therapy. In therapy, the client and therapist work together to reduce the client’s symptoms and facilitate long-lasting change. The therapist will evaluate the client in order to understand their mental health concern. The therapist will then use a variety of therapies to work on the concern. Each therapy has been researched and is used worldwide to treat various mental health illnesses. Depending on how the client responds, the therapist will use one or more therapy techniques to bring about the greatest and most long-lasting change. The Empathy Centre utilises therapy to aid our clients.

Medication

The second option is to visit a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, who has specialised in mental health illnesses. Their primary role is to treat mental health conditions through medication. Medication is used to target the symptoms of mood disorders at a chemical level.

Therapy Vs. Medication

When talking about the difference between medication and therapy, I like to explain it like this: imagine you want to lose weight. Therapy is like going to the gym. You can go work out, but you also have to make changes to your lifestyle such as changing your diet. In therapy, you come perhaps once a week and during the rest of the week, you implement the work and techniques taught to you in your daily life. This helps to create a holistic long-lasting change. Medication, on the other hand, is like having a medical procedure. The results may be quicker, however, you still need to develop the correct skills to help keep up the benefits. For many clients, one or the other option may be more beneficial. However, for other individuals, a combination of therapy and medication may be required.
